Traffic police station for Puttur

(TOI)MANGALORE: It was literally a Christmas Day gift for the Puttur sub-divisional police. Their boss and Home Minister Dr VS Acharya played Santa Claus for the police at Puttur, Kadaba as well as Vittla inugurating the new buildings for Puttur Town as well as Kadaba police stations, and laying the foundation stone for the new building for Vittla police station. Inaugurating the new building of Puttur town police station, Acharya said the government has sanctioned a traffic police station for Puttur town, which is growing as one of the biggest towns in Dakshina Kannada district. This new police station will become functional from 2010, Acharya added.

The new station in all likelihood could be housed at the old Puttur town police station, sources in the police department stated.

Acharya used this occasion to announce that measures would be taken to curb illegal trafficking of cattle and other illegal activities that take place in areas bordering Dakshina Kannada and neighbouring Kasaragod districts.

At Kadaba, Acharya said plans by the government to start 56 new police stations across the state have been placed on the backburner in the aftermath of devastating floods that hit parts of North Karnataka. The government instead will go ahead and open 25 out of the proposed 56 police stations, he said adding steps will also be taken to recruit required number of personnel to the fire and emergency services, and the Home Guards.
